Mastitis treatment

Mastitis is the inflammation of breast tissue that can develop into bacterial infection. This typically occurs in the early stage of breastfeeding in the first 6-8 weeks whilst milk supply is still establishing. The breast may become red and sore and tender to the touch – this may make feeding uncomfortable.

It is recommended to use cool compresses and feed your baby normally, but avoid over feeding or draining the breast too frequently as this can cause symptoms to worsen.

If mastitis becomes bacterial you may require antibiotics.

Most women will benefit from therapeutic ultrasound over the affected area to help reduce the tissue inflammation and restore flow of milk. At our Antony St clinic, we have Rebekah and Kaitlyn available for this treatment. Appointments can be made online or by calling reception.
